The Best Lactation Cookies For Breastfeeding (Or Anytime)

I struggled to breastfeed my babies and I tried everything to boost my milk supply: domperidone medication, blessed thistle and fenugreek, moringa, all the oatmeal and more.  Tinctures and pills and teas and whatever else I could find, I tried it.  I was pumping and feeding around the clock and I was tired...and hungry.

Then I found cookies.

If you are anything like me, I was super willing to try a cookie that promised to increase my milk supply! So I made them. And while I sadly didn't become the amazing milker I wanted to be, I did notice a bit of milk increase especially in the morning after I ate them and they were super delicious, so there's that.

The brewers yeast gives them a bit of zing you don't expect in a cookie and along with flax and oats you get the nutrients you need that can help with lactation. It's also a nice hearty cookie and makes a great snack on the run for all new Moms breastfeeding or not.

So here's the recipe I like to use, I hope you like it too.

INGREDIENTS

  • 3 cups Rolled Oats
  • 1 1/2 cups Flour
  • 5 Tbsp Brewers Yeast (*Find it in the beer/wine making area near the baking stuff at most supermarkets.  It often comes in little packets like regular yeast)
  • 3 Tbsp Ground Flaxseed
  • 1/2 tsp Baking Powder
  • 1/2 tsp Baking Soda
  • 1/4 tsp Salt
  • 10 Tbsp Butter
  • 10 Tbsp Coconut Oil
  • 1 1/4 cups Sugar (or reduce that a bit if you want)
  • 2 Eggs
  • 1 Tbsp Vanilla
  • 1 1/2 cups Semi-Sweet or Milk Chocolate Chips
  • 1/4 cup peanut butter or other nut butter (optional, but I like the extra protein and the flavor it brings)
  • 1/2 cup Chopped Nuts (any kind you like, again optional, but gives a good crunch.  Try walnuts or pecans and toast them in a pan first for extra yumminess)

Preheat the oven the 350 degrees F.

Mix flour, yeast, flax, baking powder, baking soda and salt in a bowl and set aside.  In another bowl mix butter, coconut oil, vanilla, eggs, sugar and peanut butter.  Mix well.  Pour the wet ingredients into the bowl of flour ingredients and stir until well combined (or use an electric mixer). Add the rolled oats, chocolate chips and nuts (if using) until incorporated.

Scoop 1 inch balls of dough (or use a cookie scoop) and place on a cookie sheet lined with parchment.  Flatten them out a bit with your hand or a fork. Space cookies about 2 inches apart and bake about 10 minutes until they just start to brown on the bottom.

There you have it.  I hope you like this recipe too. And if you find yourself overflowing with breastmilk, we have you covered with Haakaa breastfeeding supplies in stock and ready.

*Note this recipe is adapted from one I originally found at https://www.countrycleaver.com/.  I tweaked it to the version above cause that's the way I like them better :)
